Léopold Riou – Editions LEVALLOIS
July 2022. Léopold Riou, 26, guitar in hand and a big smile on his face, sets the Vieilles Charrues stage alight in front of 70,000 spectators for his first concert with Matmatah. It was a phenomenal debut, and a feat he would repeat from SMAC to Zenith during the two years of intense touring that followed with the Brest-based band. It has to be said that this is not the young guitarist’s first rock project. Since 2018, he has released 3 albums with Kitch, the rock band of which he is founder and frontman. But the musician has many other talents. A songwriter and performer in the studio and on stage, he also worked in sound engineering for five years, and logically thrives on artistic production. So, in 2024, it was with a suitcase full of new songs that he began his personal project, under his own name. Temporarily abandoning his guitar riffs, he returned to the pop influences of his youth. And from the tracks he reveals in dribs and drabs, we can only note his references to mainstream American pop spiced up with hip-hop culture. Produced and recorded alone at home, in the style of young prodigy producers, his songs, sometimes tinged with teenage nostalgia, are reminiscent of the pop-rap prod of Timbaland or Kanye West, or the 90s sounds of Bleachers. His debut EP is scheduled for release in early 2025.
