From your point of view, what is the biggest challenge facing independent music publishers?
The volume and complexity that is associated with music rights metadata. For small publishers, it can be a lack of dedicated resource or technology, to manage data effectively to ensure maximum return on investment for the rights they represent. With larger players, it can be a challenge to keep on top of acquisitions, the relinquishment of rights and the administration involved in disseminating this updated information in a timely manner across a growing number of platforms and formats.
What is the biggest opportunity?
Music publishers today have access to such a variety of third-party services whom to partner with and explore new ways of operating, monetising rights and collecting royalties. No matter the size of the publisher, there is opportunity to work with new and exciting providers who provide data and insights. This allows publishers to make informed decisions quickly – freeing up valuable internal resources and expertise to focus on creativity and growth.
How do you anticipate the music industry changing over the coming years in terms of what you do?
We believe there will be a continuation of large PRO’s and copyright organisations sharing the rights information they hold on behalf of their members to the public. This is in direct response to the growing pressure from the industry demanding more transparency. For us, this aligns with our mission to ensure our clients have access to the most accurate music cue sheets linked to broadcast transmissions and streaming platforms for best in practice royalty income tracking.
Whether you embrace it or have concerns, AI is already transforming the industry’s approach to metadata management. We see the value it can bring in overhauling and enhancing large datasets efficiently but equally recognise the need for strong oversight and governance of its underlying principles.
How can music publishers best engage with your company in particular to further their own business?
We provide two distinct services – the first is our music cuesheet platform which links over 5 million cuesheets to 35 million broadcast transmissions in 40 countries. This provides clients with a wealth of data that can be mined in relation to the rights they represent at the touch of a button. The second is back office administration services to assist music publishers with day to day publishing activities. Our team of experts seamlessly integrate with your existing processes and technology to help reduce costs associated with resource allocation.
What’s coming up for you that our members should be aware of?
Early 2025, we are launching the streaming services module of our system, giving clients unparalleled visibility on what content is available on almost 20 platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney + and more.
